Job Brief

Candidates for the Electronics Technician position will perform hands on work involving the installation, provisioning, maintenance, and repair of telecommunications electronic equipment.

Job Responsibilities

  • Knowledge and safe installation practices as they pertain to the construction of telecommunication infrastructure (racks, equipment, grounding (R56), cables, and associated terminations)
  • Proper use of basic hand and power tools
  • Internet Protocol Multiprotocol Label Switching (IP MPLS) Nokia 7750, 7705
  • Multiprotocol Label Switching Transport Protocol (MPLS TP) OTN XTRAN
  • Carrier Ethernet (MEF Standards)
  • Firewalls
  • Synchronous Optical Networking (SONET) (GE JMUX, Ciena 6500,)
  • Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) (Ciena 6500)
  • Channel Banks (GE T1MX)
  • Digital Cross Connects (Coriant (Tellabs), Sycamore)
  • System Protection Components
  • Remote Terminal Units (RTU)
  • Fiber Optics (Cleaning, inspecting, installing jumpers, ADC splice & termination panels,
  • IP Networking fundamentals (Cisco IOS, DHCP, VLANS, EIGRP, OSPF, BGP, VOIP, DNS, Trunking, IP subnetting)

Skills & Abilities

  • Understand and qualified to install, provision and troubleshoot telecommunication networks.
  • Interpret complex circuit diagrams.
  • Utilize test equipment used to qualify and troubleshoot various transport network systems.
  • Analyze and decipher circuit performance.
  • Assess system operation events and troubleshoot, analyze circuit failure.
  • Operate technical test equipment.
  • Provide detailed written and verbal communication with customer base, engineering, and external professional entities.
  • Assess technology improvement hardware, software and firmware stability and improvement opportunities.
  • Must have excellent communication, organization, leadership and customer service skills, along with strong business ethics.

Brief Networking Experience

  • Familiarity with Cisco Routers, Switches, and IOS/IOS-XE
  • Working understanding of multiple MPLS technologies including ISIS, BGP, RSVP, LDP, VPRN, VPLS, EPIPE, CPIPE
  • Understanding of the OSI model
  • Layer 2 Switching and Layer 3 Routing
  • Firewall and security tools, techniques and methods
  • Latency and Throughput Test and Measurement
  • Serial to IP conversion
  • Traffic Profiling

  • Tech 1: No experience required at entry .
  • Tech 2: Minimum of 24 months of experience in Electronics Tech 1 job classification, or equivalent experience, as well as meet Electronics Tech 2 criteria as defined in the department’s approved Technician Training Program specifications.
  • Tech 3: Minimum of 24 months of experience in Electronics Tech 2 job classification or graduate from an approved Electronics Technician Apprenticeship, Electronics Technician Training Program, or equivalent training and meet Electronic Tech 3 criteria as defined in the department’s approved Electronics Technician 3 Advancement Criteria specifications. Must have a minimum of 4 years of total experience to progress to or be hired as an Electronics Technician 3.
  • Sr. Tech: Minimum of 36 months of experience in Electronics Tech 3 job classification or graduate of an approved Electronics Technician Apprentice Program, Technician Training Program, or equivalent; and meet Senior Electronics Technician criteria as defined in the department’s approved Senior Electronics Technician Advancement Criteria Document. Must have a minimum of 7 years of total experience to progress to or be hired as a Senior Electronics Technician.
  • Contact the department hiring manager for the Technician Training Plan Advancement Criteria Documents.
  • For Tech 1 and Tech 2, initial placement, progressions, promotions, and salaries are determined by the hiring manager’s departmental approved Technician Training Program Governance specifications.

Progression requirements:

  • Tech 1: High school education or equivalent plus 6 management approved credit hours; and/or graduation from an accredited technical school.
  • Tech 2: Progression to Electronics Tech 2 requires 24 management approved credit hours.
  • Tech 3: Graduate of a state approved Electronics Technician Apprenticeship Program, Electronics Technician Training Program, or equivalent training. Requires 48 management approved college level credit hours.
  • Senior: Progression to Senior Electronics Technician requires 48 management approved college level credit hours.
