Position Summary, Job Requirements & Responsibilities
What We’re Looking For:
Iridium is seeking a talented and motivated entry level Systems Engineer to join our team! As a Systems Engineer I, you will participate in the development, implementation, and verification of requirements for the Iridium communication system and Iridium services. You will also participate in systems engineering planning, scheduling, and execution to include requirements definition, allocation, system design, analyses and trade studies, hardware/software design oversight, system integration & testing, and system verification. Additionally, you will interact with, monitor, and provide guidance to third party developers and contracted engineering companies. You will succeed if you enjoy working on and solving technical problems as part of a broader Engineering team.
What You’ll Do:
- Participate in systems engineering efforts on assigned projects associated with the management and enhancement of existing services and the development of new services and capabilities
- Assist in conducting technical feasibility analysis and trade studies
- Aid in the development and evaluation of top-level system requirements and allocation to subsystems
- Assist in conducting system integration and test planning
- Support project management and program documentation
- Participate in the design of in-house projects
- Support systems engineering initiatives by creating documentation to capture system requirements and system implementation details
- Assist with implementation tracking and non-conformance resolution
- Provide summary of project results, issues tracking, and reporting to management
Experience & Education Requirements / EEO
What You’ll Need to Succeed:
- Bachelor’s degree in a Computer Science or Engineering discipline, with software coding coursework
- Basic knowledge of systems engineering methodologies and processes to include requirements definition, requirement allocation, system analyses, system trades, system verification, and anomaly resolution
- Proficient with standard Microsoft Office/engineering tools (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Strong ability to code and assist with coding and to draft sound, well-structured documents
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to communicate key messages and ideas clearly and effectively
- Can cultivate meaningful relationships with your manager and members of your team, while being open and responsive to constructive feedback as they guide and mentor you
- The ability to think outside the box to help solve problems, with the humility to ask for help when needed
- Adaptability to a dynamic environment and the readiness to take on any new tasks that are handed to you
- A motivation to achieve outcomes and results
- Capable of handling multiple tasks at once and completing them on time with mostly no errors
- An eagerness to develop professionally, continuously learn, and share knowledge with others
Things That Would be Great if You Brought to the Table:
- Prior experience in relevant fields and/or with relevant technical experience in software development and protocols
- Knowledge or experience with the following:
- Communications systems
- Circuit and packet switched voice and data communications
- TCP/IP communications, and VoIP technologies
- Knowledge or experience in telecommunication systems and the respective supporting sub systems
- Experience with any of the following technologies:
- Software programming in C/C++, Tcl/Tk, Python, PHP, Shell Scripting, Node.js
- Databases: Oracle, MySQL
- Linux/Redhat
- Cloud based architectures and services such as Amazon Web Services (AWS)
- Protocol analyzing tools such as Wireshark or Spectra2
- Protocols: TCP/IP, IPSec, SIP, MAP, SS7, ISDN.
- Telecom industry specs and architecture: 3GPP, EPC, GSM.
- Cisco Certifications
Work Environment:
This position primarily works in the company office or in a home office. The position is largely sedentary with the majority of the position sitting in a chair and working with a computer. The role uses basic office equipment including a phone, video, computer, keyboard, mouse and printer. For meetings in-person, this position will need to be able stand, walk within the office and climb stairs on occasion.
