Job Description
MAJOR PURPOSE OF POSITION
Subject to continued funding and staff priorities, the Civil Practice is seeking an experienced attorney to join the Citywide Consumer Law Unit as a Bankruptcy Staff Attorney. The Staff Attorney will represent debtors in Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy proceedings in both the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York and may serve as a mentor to other staff attorneys in bringing bankruptcy cases. Although based at the Queens Neighborhood Office, the attorney will represent clients in all five boroughs. The Unit provides legal advice and representation to eligible New Yorkers in a range of consumer matters, including debt collection and consumer rights issues. We also engage in advocacy to protect the rights of low-income New Yorkers in matters of consumer law and provide education to clients about their rights.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
- Represent and assist clients in Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy proceedings
- Represent clients and advocacy with local, city, state and federal agencies
- Advocate with local, state and federal agencies on behalf of clients
- Conduct trainings, community outreach and education
- Engage in policy advocacy for legislative and regulatory reform
- Coordinate and collaborate with other groups and organizations
- Represent the Civil Practice and The Legal Aid Society in the community
- Promote the work of the office, Consumer Law Unit, and the Civil Practice
- Work with pro bono lawyer and partner organizations
- Conduct off-site intake, including during evening hours as needed
- Other duties as assigned

Requirements
TRAINING AND QUALIFICATIONS
- New York State Bar admission or ready for NYS Bar admission
- Admission to the Eastern and Southern District preferred
- Experience in providing bankruptcy assistance required
- Favorable consideration will be given to attorneys who have familiarity with consumer and foreclosure issues
- Strong litigation skills preferred
- Excellent written and oral advocacy skills
- Ability to work independently as well as in a team and manage a high volume of cases
- Demonstrated commitment to and experience in public interest law and civil legal services
- Ability to coordinate and collaborate successfully with other groups and organizations
- Excellent organizational skills
- Proficiency in languages other than English is desirable, but not required
