Job description: J Harlan Group is currently conducting a search for a Linux Platform Lead – Low Latency Compute Services at a prominent NYC Hedge Fund
The Compute Services organization is responsible for architecting, engineering, supporting and managing the firm’s estate of servers, enterprise storage, systems virtualization and core enterprise services. The Linux Low Latency & Trading Lead will have direct responsibility for all aspects of Low Latency and trading estate including L1 and L2 production support, engineering, architecture and strategy. The successful candidate will be an SME in the Linux space as well as possess the capability to build and motivate a team to achieve a successful outcome. The role will be primarily focused on building and supporting a low latency colo based trading service and interfacing with a vast array of Portfolio Managers to deliver them the trading solutions they need to be successful.
Principal Responsibilities
- Management of a team of SMEs to design and manage the firm’s colo trading services and portfolio manager facing infrastructure
- Provide single point of contact for low latency colo based trading teams, interfacing with data center providers and network partners as necessary
- Design and implement massively scalable, high-performance, cutting-edge infrastructure for quantitative trading focused compute grids
- Leadership in developing and implementing plan for end to end automation in building and maintaining advanced compute and storage fabrics
- Establish and drive the adoption of development standards around source control, testing, and continuous integration with regards to usage within infrastructure as code
- Develop processes and standards to automate the testing and delivery of resilient and secure infrastructure in a timely and repeatable fashion using configuration management driven principles
- Manage execution of a wide variety of technical projects and own the platform book of work, juggle competing priorities and drive team to meet committed dates
- Develop tactical and strategic technical solutions that will address business and IT requirements. Implement proofs-of-concepts for innovative designs to enhance the firm’s competitive advantage.
- Act as escalation manager for highly critical business requests, responsible for driving team members to meet challenging SLAs and for working across teams to achieve a common goal
- Actively participate in production outage incidents, ensuring root-cause analysis is identified and knowledge gained is applied for process improvement
The ideal candidate would have a background:
- Experience in the Linux space is required with team lead experience managing IT staff is required
- Financial services experience is preferred but not required
- The candidate should have in depth knowledge of Linux systems administration, networking, and security, including automated configuration and state management, and orchestration across systems.
- Experience with configuration management driven administration using tools such as Chef, Puppet, Salt, or Ansible is desired.
- Experience working with containers and container services (eg docker, mesos, coreos etc) is also a significant plus as is familiarity with tools for testing build automation.
- Experience working with Solace based application messaging platform is a plus.
- Solid programming and scripting skills required. Comfort and experience with BASH, Python, Ruby, Java and C/C++ is big plus.
- Experience exposing APIs (monitoring, control etc.) to Infrastructure and other users
- Experience and skill in troubleshooting and performance tuning hardware and operating systems.
- In depth knowledge of Unix operating systems, especially RHEL/CentOS ( MS Windows a plus )
- Quick learner, Detail oriented; Demonstrable thoroughness and strong ownership of work.
- Good team player with a strong willingness to participate and help others.
- Able to prioritize in a fast moving, high pressure, constantly changing environment; High sense of urgency.
- Strong communication skills.
