DSHS’s , is looking to hire four Claims Officer 2s for our Virtual Legal Office. Claims Officers are Attorneys who serve as legal advisers on child support matters. Work location at a VLO can be assigned to any DCS field office throughout the State of Washington, specifically Olympia, Tacoma, Kennewick, Wenatchee, or Yakima.
Attorneys with a strong commitment to public service and current admission to practice law in the State of Washington are encouraged to apply. No experience is needed. Initial training will be completed in a mostly virtual group environment. This is a great opportunity to gain legal work experience if you have a desire to work with a legal team located throughout the state of WA, sharing ideas and working collaboratively

Some of what you will do
- Represent the department’s interests in adjudicative and/or other legal proceedings, including Tribal court duties
- Use independent judgment to provide equitable relief of child support debts owed to the State of Washington
- Negotiate with private attorneys, other representatives, and other parties directly prior to adjudicative proceedings, with authority to settle matters
- Appear as DCS’s representative/witness before an Administrative Law Judge
- Draft and prepare legal documents
- Provide advice and recommend procedures to Child Support Enforcement Officers according to federal and state statutory, administrative, and judicial laws regarding administration of the support enforcement program
- Maintain and conduct ongoing reviews of case law, statutes, and regulations governing establishment and collection of child support or debts due to the state, while safeguarding sensitive and confidential information

Professionals with current admission to practice law (or qualified to practice law) in the State of Washington
These jobs may be filled at the Claims Officer 1 level In-Training. Generally, those with no prior state service may be hired at the first step of the salary schedule.
Preferred knowledge, skills, and abilities
- Law practice experience in child support, domestic relations, debt recovery, or another related program helpful, but not required
- Analyze information to determine responsibility for support or debts
- Proficiency in conducting legal research
- Effective communication skills, particularly using telephonic or electronic methods
- Sensitivity and cultural knowledge to work well with diverse populations
- Evaluate available judicial and administrative remedies to advise their use in specific support enforcement cases
- Time and case management skills
